A Parent's Guide to Teens and Chat Apps

Nov 4, 2026 · AzamanChat team

Young people use chat apps to talk to friends, share jokes and follow creators. For parents, it can feel difficult to know what is safe. The best approach is interest, conversation and clear rules, not fear.

Check the age rules

AzamanChat is for people aged 13 and over. If your child is younger, please do not let them create an account. Always check the minimum age of any app they use.

Talk before you set rules

Ask your teenager what apps they like and why. When they feel you are curious instead of angry, they will tell you when something goes wrong.

Teach the basics of safety

Explain that people online are not always who they say they are, that they should never meet a stranger from the internet alone, and that they should never share their address, school or private photos.

Show them the safety tools

Teach your teen how to block and report someone and how to hide their online status. Make sure they know they will not be in trouble for reporting something upsetting.

Agree on healthy limits

Together, choose times when phones are off, such as meals, homework and bedtime. Phones charged outside the bedroom help sleep a great deal.

Watch for warning signs

Sudden secrecy, mood changes, trouble sleeping or fear of checking messages can be signs of bullying or pressure. Stay calm, listen and offer support.

Lead by example

Children copy what they see. If adults are always on their phones at dinner, rules will not work. Put your own phone away too.
