Group Chat Etiquette: How to Be a Great Member
Group chats are wonderful for planning events and sharing news, but they can also become noisy, confusing or hurtful. A few good habits make life easier for everyone in the group.
Know the purpose of the group
A group for a family gathering is not the place for jokes at midnight or advertising your business. Keep messages related to the reason the group exists, and use private chat for side conversations.
Think about timing
Not everyone is awake or free when you are. Avoid sending many messages late at night or early in the morning, and do not expect an instant reply from every member.
Do not spam
Sending the same message again and again, long chain messages or many forwards fills other people's phones and makes them leave. Send one clear message instead of ten short ones.
Be careful with jokes and photos
What is funny to you may hurt someone else. Never post a photo of a person without their permission, and never share embarrassing pictures or private messages from another chat.
Respect different opinions
Disagreements will happen. Argue about ideas, not about people. If a discussion becomes heated, suggest moving on or talking privately.
Use mute and leave without guilt
If a group takes too much of your time, you can mute it. If it no longer serves you, you can politely leave. A short message like 'I need to step out, take care everyone' is enough.
Admins have a job too
If you manage a group, set clear rules, welcome new people and remove members who harass others. A well run group stays active for years.
