Protect Your Privacy on Chat Apps: A Simple Checklist
You control a lot of what other people can see about you. Go through this checklist once and you will be much safer.
Choose what others can see
Check your profile photo, name and bio. Only put information you are happy for strangers to read. Avoid your school, address or workplace.
Control your online status
You can hide when you are online and your last seen time. Remember that in many apps, if you hide yours you cannot see other people's either.
Decide who can contact you
Only accept chats from people you know. Block unknown people who send strange messages and report anyone who harasses you.
Be careful with links
Do not tap links from strangers. They can lead to fake login pages that steal your password. If a friend sends a strange link, ask them if they really sent it.
Keep your phone locked
Use a screen lock. If your phone is lost or stolen, a lock stops people from opening your chats.
Review your notifications
Message previews can show private content on a locked screen. You can turn previews off in your phone settings if you share your phone with others.
Delete what you do not need
You can delete messages and old photos you no longer want to keep. Doing a cleanup from time to time is a good habit.
