Voice Notes or Text Messages: Which Should You Send?
Both are useful. Choosing the right one makes your conversations smoother.
When text is better
Use text for short facts like addresses, times, numbers and links. People can search and copy them later. Text is also better when the other person is in a meeting or a quiet place.
When voice notes are better
Use voice for long stories, emotions, jokes and explanations. Tone of voice shows feelings that text hides. Voice notes are also faster if you are walking or driving, though please stay safe and never type or record while driving.
Keep voice notes short
One to two minutes is a good length. If you have a lot to say, a call may be better than a very long recording.
Be kind to your listener
Speak clearly, avoid noisy places and do not send voice notes to someone who is clearly busy and prefers text. When in doubt, ask what they like.
Mix them
A quick text to say you are about to send a voice note, followed by the recording, is a friendly habit. Send a short written summary for important information.
